Chapter Twenty-Three

Well call me a big fat liar. I knew exactly what Casey saw in the picture she’d had the waiter take of us at Canter’s. I was frustrated with myself for not asking her to text me the picture, but if I had, I was sure she’d interpret it as a gain on her argument about us dating. But it was better I hadn’t asked her to send it to me. I would not be able to resist the temptation to pull it up again and again. I wondered if Casey looked at it often or whether she’d forgotten about it.

The last few weeks, we bumped into each other sometimes when I was walking Elmo, not that I walked by her house on purpose or kept track of when she typically finished up at the pet store. Sometimes she invited me to go to the movies or check out a new store that opened in town, stuff that maybe could have been called a date, but she never pushed it.

Even though she didn’t bring it up anymore, the subject kept creeping into my thoughts. Lately, it seemed like eighty percent of the library patrons were checking out romance books. Was that simply because spring was in the air? I was not going to ask her if she’d ever read any of the titles that came up when I searched to see if our library had any sapphic books. There were seventeen pages of results! Why was she pushing Flannery O’Connor on me instead of any of those stories?

A good month after we’d gone to the bookstore, I wasn’t working the weekend, so I packed up all my dirty laundry to do in Revelia. I was sitting at the puzzle table Saturday morning when Pops dropped Elmo’s leash next to me. “I’ve been trying to walk the dog more because Casey says it’s good for doodles, but my bones are tired, so take the dog for a walk. Are you two doing anything this weekend?”

“Why do you think I’m doing something with Casey?”

He lifted his hands. “You said the two of you had plans last weekend, and it seems like most weekends you see her, especially if you’re here.”

“I haven’t talked to her,” I said.

“She’s probably still at the pet store. Why don’t you take Elmo by and see if she’d join us for pulled pork tonight?”

It was like he was feeling out who Casey was to me. The problem was that the more time we spent together, the more I did want to try dating Casey. For a second, I considered not stopping to ask and telling him she was busy, but there are all sorts of spies in Revelia, and it would only be a matter of days before my pops found out I’d lied. Accepting I was stuck with walking the dog and extending the invitation, I clipped on the harness and headed out. I didn’t walk straight to town. Figuring Elmo needed lots of exercise anyway, I headed east but kept going when I got to Revelia’s main street.
